Information on buying a dog and caring for it. Articles and information on buying a dog and caring for it.

How Much are you Willing to Spend on your Dog?

There are two distinct, different types of monetary concerns that you’re going to have to look into when you’re considering getting a dog.

The first of these is the initial amount of money that you’re going to have spend to get your dog. Unless you’re getting the purebred variety of dog breed however, you won’t have to spend too much in this initial stage.

That is, at least not for your dog. You will however need to have an initial outlay ready to cover the cost of doggy food, doggy bowls and a doggy bed or house.

Let’s not forget the chew toy or two so that he has something to play with, and other sundry little items that will almost definitely catch your eye and which you (not the dog), must have.

That’s only the first part of the initial outlay.

You will then have a secondary stage which includes such things as veterinary runs, grooming necessities, and sometimes in the event of misfortune happening and your dog running off and biting someone, third party insurance as well as other types of insurance.

And that’s for starters. You will then have to calculate your monthly outgoings as needed for the dog and see if you are able to afford the costs of upkeep for him.

Even if you never get insurance or buy him another chew toy ever again, you will still need to spend on food and veterinary costs. These will be the two constants in your life and depending on the size and the breed of the dog, you will find that your costs go up or down.

For most people these are not a problem, and they will also find that they can even get the additional chew toy or two along with insurance to cover any possibilities.

But if these are beyond your means, and the chew toy becomes a treat that you get for you dog when he’s been especially good, then you should only take the basics into account. Namely these are,

  • Veterinary bills
  • Food costs
  • Grooming essentials

Monthly, this won’t necessarily be such a large problem and you will find that the costs merge with your own daily and monthly costs hardly any problem.

And you really don’t need to calculate these costs now anyway. What you need to do, is come to a realization that your monthly outgoings will grow slightly as you bring in another mouth to feed.

Having said that, for me, the companionship and joy that my dogs bring me are well worth the money and effort that I spend on them, and I know that I for one, will always have a dog in my life.
