Articles and information on where your dog will stay once it gets home.

Where Will Your Dog Stay?

Before you get a dog, you will need to think to yourself, “Where will I keep the dog?” It’s not enough that you have a large yard or a spacious new dog house.

As I keep mentioning, dogs are sociable animals, and leaving them outside to deal with life on their own won’t go down well with most dogs. Even the toughest watchdog needs a kind word here and there to keep its sprits up and willing.

In the case of certain dogs you might find that although you have a large back garden for them to run around in, they much prefer to spend their time by your side.

This means that they will most likely be in the house more often than not. You will have to decide early on whether this is acceptable or not.

If you get an especially sociable animal then you might find that no matter how hard you try you won’t be able to boot it out of the house.  Somewhat reminiscent of the end scene from the “Flintstone’s” cartoon where the “dog” Dino is put out of the house but finds a way back in anyway.

Regardless of this however, you will need to provide adequate space and housing for your dog. This way you know that there is somewhere for it to stay when you’re not at home, or when you put the dog outside for the night (or day).

This is also a good idea if you want to train your dog from the beginning itself, to treat his own personal space as his, and not a place that he comes to only when he’s annoyed at you!

Housing for your dog doesn’t need to be anything fancier than your basic doghouse or even the garage or the garden shed.

As long as there is adequate space to contain the dog with no discomfort on the part of the dog, if it is weather proofed so that he doesn’t get wet or snow bound, and if there is more than adequate lighting and breathing space, you (and your dog) should be fine.

Anything that comes under the heading of personalized luxury doghouses is just an added bonus. Be warned though that sometimes no matter how well appointed the doghouse is, your dog just won’t stay inside.

In this case you will need to find alternate housing which is more suited to your dog. After all, if you have preferences about the way that your home should look like, and if you won’t even consider living in certain places, what makes a dog any different?

Then again, depending on the breed of dog you’re getting, your dog “housing” can be a dog bed or even a dog blanket. There are a number of these available to purchase these days and most promise a good night’s sleep for your dog.

And if you’re thinking to yourself that in earlier days dogs would have spent the night out on the porch and that should work for your dog as well, think again. Dogs these days are much the same as kids, and need more luxuries then they previously would have done without!
