Are Chihuahuas Good Dogs in General?

I have been considering purchasing an 8 week old male Chihuahua puppy and have heard a lot of mixed messages about the breed. I only know one Chihuahua and he is very sweet and loving. I have heard they are loyal and when socialized well are fine around strangers and other dogs, but have also heard that there is simply no hope for them and they are all skittish and aggressive. What should I believe? What sort of things should I look into before I decide?

chihuahuas are noisy Little dogs renowned for chasing other dogs nipping and being yappy,some are well mannered but its the breed of dog.

I got a 2 year old chihuahua and he is loyal and very protective. He is very alert, I mean when I am sleeping he barks if there is anything outside, he attacks at my command, just a very good house dog, I think he is so loyal he would take a bullet for me.

I had a chihuahua for about 10 years and she was a wonderful dog. If I didn't have 2 dogs and 4 cats, I would get another one. I usually end up with my pets coming to me, rather than me seeking them out. I think the homeless animals have marked my house like the Hobos used to put a mark on a place where they could get a handout. LOL

Some are skittish and protective, and some are outgoing and friendly. Socializing them as puppies helps, but some of the protective personality is in the breeding. I have two chihuahuas and even though they have both been socialized since they were puppies, they are both a bit skittish and protective when new people come around (one more than the other, and she was socialized a little more). But after a person has come over for a few times, they calm down usually.

There is a general stereotype for dog breeds to help people pick what they are looking for, and theres always exceptions to the rule. If you really want a chihuahua but are worried about the temperament, go to different breeders and see what the parents are like, you're more likely to get a good social dog if the parents have good behaviors too. Don't forget to socialize it as well to keep it from getting scared and anxious over new things.
