Default Why is my chinchilla still acting strangely?

I got my chinchilla when he was a little over a year old, and I've had him for about a year and a half. The only problem is, I still can't figure out how to help him warm up to me.

When I first got him, he was VERY scared and confused, as most new pets are - throughout the year, he's warmed up to me a lot, but still is not comfortable when I pet him for over 10 seconds, or when I try to hold him. I've almost given up with that, because even though I've had him a year and a half and try to handle him regularly, he gets angry and bites every time I try to hold him. However, he's fine with just normal interaction - he crawls in my hands, simple things like that.

He refuses to leave his cage, and doesn't like to play in the run-around balls. He won't even jump out into bins or anything - when the door is left open, he doesn't leave.

I've tried giving him treats when he's good, that's how I taught him to warm up to me - but I feel like I'm never going to manage to be this little guy's friend! What am I doing wrong?
Well, I bought him from the pet store...I was thinking maybe it's because I didn't buy him from when he was a baby? The leash idea was good..but..I would have to find out how to even get a leash on him, lol. Like I said, he will deal with some handling for about 15 seconds..but otherwise.....

I had a chinchilla that was like that. I too was it's second owner. They just don't really like change. And it depends on how much the previous owners handled it.
