what should i consider when getting another dog..?

I currently have a 1 year old male dog ( hound) (neutered) and i really want another dog, well puppy, so what should i look for with another puppy.. male or female? Oh and to add, my dog really doesnt get along with other male dogs, but i think if i were to get a male i would have him neutered as soon as possible.. so how would it be to have two dogs?
I have a plott hound, he is very active, I run with him every morning for about 45 mins. ..I stay in an apt. one bedroom. i am looking for a medium size dog because my dog is 42 lbs.
