Help am I wrong?

I just bought a new rottweiler puppy. I have a 2 and a half year old daughter. My mother in law insists we get rid of it because we have a child and the dog is going to be vicious. I wanted a dog that would be good with the family but also protect us god forbid if anyone tried to hurt us. My husband works nights and I live in a bad neighborhood. I will socialize my dog and i will do whatever I can to make him friendly I do not want a vicious dog. I want him to be friendly and have the ability to protect me if a situation should arize. I believe that for the most part rottweilers are calm and friendly by nature and when they are mean it is there owners that make them that way. So far my dog is calm and gentle and very friendly he gets along with other dogs and he is very lovable. Am I wrong was this a bad choice for my family.
