My shih tzu puppy cries?

My puppy is about 7 months old now and I normally put him in the kitchen to sleep at about 10pm every night, and i can normally hear him barking from downstairs at 4am. This is annoying my family and i have to wake up everytime and calm him down. I'm still at school and Im losing my concentration because i can't get the sleep i need.
There is a lampost light that semi shines into the kitchen aswell as there being shadows etc but no noise. Also, he cries and barks when we put him away in the kitchen when we are cleaning or have family time. He gets upset when he is alone. Anyway to prevent the barking?

when he is barking at night,and as far as the crying and barking when you put in there, he will get used to it and the family needs to put in ear plugs. Sorry
